Key Differences:
1. Durability and Impact Resistance
Polycarbonate: This is its most prominent advantage. High-quality polycarbonate sheets (such as those with a UV coating) possess exceptional impact resistance, capable of withstanding hail and falling objects. Unlike fabric, they do not tear or flap noisily in the wind, and their service life can extend to 10–20 years or even longer.
Fabric: Whether made of acrylic or polyester, fabric is susceptible to being scratched or torn by sharp objects. Prolonged exposure to sun and rain causes the fibers to age and become brittle, making the material prone to damage during windy weather. Typically, the fabric needs to be replaced every 3 to 7 years.
2. Waterproofing and Shading Performance
Waterproofing: Polycarbonate is a rigid sheet material; provided it is installed with an appropriate slope and its seams are properly sealed, it is completely waterproof. During rainfall, it serves as a dry space for storage or as a sheltered walkway. While fabric offers a certain degree of water resistance, water can easily seep through the seams, and prolonged dampness makes it prone to mold growth.
Shading and Thermal Insulation: Polycarbonate typically features a hollow structure (multi-layer panels), offering superior thermal insulation compared to single-layer fabric. It is available in various light transmission levels (e.g., tinted brown or milky white), allowing it to block UV rays while maintaining soft, diffused lighting; unlike dark fabrics—which absorb heat and create a stuffy atmosphere underneath—polycarbonate keeps the space beneath the canopy cool and comfortable.
3. Maintenance and Cleaning
Polycarbonate: Extremely low-maintenance. Its smooth surface resists dust accumulation and can often be kept clean simply by rainwater runoff. It does not absorb moisture, so it is immune to mold and rot. Occasional wiping with a soft cloth is all that is required.
Fabric: High maintenance costs. It easily accumulates dust and bird droppings, which are difficult to clean thoroughly. Prolonged exposure to damp environments fosters mold growth and leads to unsightly black spots that are difficult to remove.
4. Aesthetics and Design
Polycarbonate: Tends toward a modern, minimalist aesthetic. It can be fabricated into flat or curved shapes, or combined with aluminum alloy frameworks, resulting in a sleek and visually transparent appearance.
Fabric: Offers a casual, cozy aesthetic. Available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, it is well-suited for rustic or resort-style designs; however, over time, it is prone to fading and can begin to look worn or dated.
